The surname "Yaus" is of German origin. While the name does not exist with that spelling in Germany, we believe it to be an Anglicized version of "Jaus" or "Jauss", both surnames common in southwestern Germany, and which are pronounced the same as "Yaus" is in English. (Our family records don't include the original spelling.) "Jauss", in turn, appears to be a regional variant of the more common "Gauss".

In the US, there are two branches with the surname Yaus: one in upstate New York (ours), and another centered in Ohio. We do not believe we are related to the latter.
